What sparked the creation of this unconventional design? Ludacer cites a counter-intuitive response to his slightly elevated cholesterol levels. In 2011, he began toying with the idea of fitting more eggs into a carton, and the Baker's Dozen Egg Carton was the result.
What sets this egg carton apart is its ability to hold 13 eggs, a number not typically seen in egg packaging. The carton is made using traditional methods, with molded paper fiber, a material with a long history in egg carton manufacturing. Despite its unconventional number of eggs, the Baker's Dozen carton was designed to be structurally strange, yet familiar. It is also made of 100% recycled paper, making it an eco-friendly choice.
The design is particularly suited for small egg producers who pack their eggs by hand, such as farm stands and farmer's markets. Although large egg producers expressed interest in the design, their egg-packing machinery is designed to pack eggs in pairs, making a retooling investment necessary to accommodate the odd number of eggs.
One of the challenges faced during the design process was realizing that the primary customers were not retail consumers, but small poultry farms. Ludacer consulted directly with these farmers and learned that their customers typically reuse cartons, bringing them back to be refilled. With this in mind, a self-effacing, debossed logo was created, giving farmers the option of covering the logo with their own labels, or simply relying on the carton's self-explanatory statement: "Contains 13 Farm Fresh Eggs."
Despite the challenges, the Baker's Dozen Egg Carton is a testament to Ludacer's innovative thinking and commitment to sustainable design. The project, which took approximately eight years to complete, has resulted in a unique and distinctive package that not only serves a practical purpose but also pushes the boundaries of traditional packaging design.
The Baker's Dozen Egg Carton is a registered trademark of Baker's Dozen Egg Cartons, LLC. Its innovative design and unique properties have earned it the Silver A' Packaging Design Award, a prestigious recognition given to designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
